DESCRIPTION:<< All Events\n \nConcert of Colors 2025\n\n  \nThe Concert of Colors returns this summer for its 34th annual free global music festival in the heart of Detroit and WDET is proud to be an official media partner. The Concert of Colors is one of the nation’s longest-running\, largest\, free and global music festivals featuring music from around the world at its best. \nThe Concert of Colors was established by Ismael Ahmed (host of WDET’s This Island Earth) and New Detroit in 1993 as a one-day event at Chene Park on Detroit’s riverfront. The inaugural event drew a modest crowd to Chene Park\, but by 1999\, some 10\,000 music lovers were coming out each year. The festival expanded to three days in 2001\, when it was part of the official festivities for Detroit’s 300th birthday\, drawing an audience of 100\,000. In 2019\, the concert expanded to nine days. DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets » \nWDET presents the 2025 Sounds Like Detroit showcase\, featuring: \nCORAZON SZELL AND THE NORTH INGALLS – Selected by Jeff Milo (MI Local): \nCorazon Szell (she/her) is a guitarist from Brooklyn\, New York and she recently graduated from the University of Michigan – School of Music\, Theatre & Dance with a Bachelor’s Degree in both Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation and Performing Arts Management and Entrepreneurship. Throughout her four years at the University of Michigan she has performed as the primary guitarist for a variety of performances and ensembles on campus\, from musical theater productions to the UM Big Band Jazz Ensemble. \nCorazon immerses herself in many different music genres and performance settings because she believes it is of the utmost importance to diversify her skillset on the guitar and within music overall. She strongly believes\, in order to succeed as a musician today\, one must always keep an open mind\, an open ear\, and an open heart. With this in mind\, she constantly manifests new musical opportunities. \nOne of Corazon’s greatest prides is being the founder\, bandleader\, lead guitarist and vocalist for the Ann Arbor\, MI based band North Ingalls. The band performs mainly original music (written and arranged) by Corazon\, along with some covers. The vision is inspired by the many diverse musical styles she listens to and studies. Genres such as folk\, jazz\, popular\, R&B\, rap and rock to name a few\, are reflected in her compositions and the band’s setlist\, along with music by artists including The Lumineers\, Noah Kahan\, Caamp\, and Jack Johnson. North Ingalls has played throughout the Ann Arbor area in established venues such as The Ark\, North Star Lounge\, and The Blind Pig. \nBETH – Selected by Chris Campbell (The Progressive Underground): \nBETH is a powerhouse vocalist\, songwriter\, and actress from Detroit\, MI\, and the daughter of Motown legend Johnny Griffith of the Funk Brothers. A former background singer for Anita Baker and KEM\, BETH stepped into the spotlight as a standout contestant on NBC’s The Voice (Season 16)\, where she was mentored by Kelly Clarkson and John Legend. She has released seven solo projects\, toured globally with icons like KEM and The O’Jays\, and appeared in major film\, TV\, and stage productions. With roots in soul\, R&B\, and beyond\, BETH continues to shine as one of the most dynamic voices in music and entertainment today. \nSAMUEL NALANGIRA – Selected by Liz Warner (Alternate Take): \nA native of Uganda\, East Africa; Samuel Nalangira is a folk/world musician\, dancer and choreographer who has been performing since his childhood and teaching since the age of 15. He has toured across Europe\, United States\, Canada and Asia performing and leading workshops in schools\, universities\, festivals and community centers. \nHe is a multi-instrumentalist and a master at many traditional instruments including the Adungu from northern Uganda\, Akogo from Eastern Uganda\, Endingidi\, Ndongo\, Ngoni and percussion. He has also developed a unique approach and personal techniques on most of these instruments and\, in combination with soaring voice; his music carries a true identity of the sub Saharan skies. \nIn 2018\, with children from Uganda\, Samuel Nalangira choreographed and led the DANCE OF HOPE production across the United States with featured performances at LEAF festival NC and Lotus Blossoms IN. Since then\, he has been featured in many music festivals\, concerts and schools for performances and workshops \nTARIQ GARDNER & THE EVENING STAR – Selected by WDET Listeners: \nEvening Star is a Space Odyssey led by Detroit Drummer Tariq Gardner. The group has its roots in Detroit’s expansive musical tradition blending the city’s rich Jazz legacy with its history of musicians being largely malleable to fit into a wide array of musical styles travelling to the different galaxies of music of the African Diaspora (jazz\, neo-soul\, Afro-Cuban\, spirituals\, hip-hop etc.).
