High E. Coli Levels Close Lake St. Clair Metro Park Beach

Officials temporarily closed the Lake St. Clair beach after water quality tests indicated high E. coli levels.

The Macomb County Health Department has temporarily shut down the beach at Lake Saint Clair Metropark. Water quality tests from earlier in the week indicated E. coli levels had reached unsafe levels. Health Department Director Bill Ridella says he is not sure why bacterial levels have risen.

“We see, you know, runoff from all the rain that we’ve had, especially you know run off could be from animal waste, it could be from bird waste, but it could also can be just from unfortunately just all the rain we’ve had and how things run off into the water system.”

Ridella says E. coli can cause fever, nausea and infections. He says crews will test water quality levels again tomorrow in hopes of re-opening the beach.
