Sterling Heights Becoming a ‘Purple Heart City’
Sterling Heights is honoring the oldest military award in US history with a new designation.
Sterling Heights has adopted a resolution to become a Purple Heart City. In honor of the oldest military award in US history, the city is heightening awareness of the sacrifices veterans made for the country. City Management Service Specialist Amanda Thomas says the move to take on the designation started with a letter from a local veteran.
“He was saying, you know, we would really love if Sterling Heights would have this designation, and, of course, we said, you know, ‘No problem. We would love to have Sterling Heights having this designation.’ So he really got the ball rolling, and then talking with him I felt so good about us doing this because he was a great guy to talk to.”

Thomas says Sterling Heights is encouraging lawmakers to make Michigan a Purple Heart State. She says the city is holding a flag-raising ceremony on Friday to recognize National Purple Heart Day.
