Ford Engineers Working to Keep Spiders from Interfering with Fuel Vapor Lines

Ford is installing new spider screens in vehicles to keep out tiny arachnids.

Ford Motor Company is working to keep spiders from damaging vehicles with the development of a new and improved “spider screen.” The automaker discovered the eight-legged creatures blocking fuel vapor lines more than a decade ago, but is now updating the spider screens to keep out even smaller arachnids.

Ford Fuel Systems Engineer David Gimby developed the device. He spoke with WDET’s Marissa Gawel about why certain spider species make their homes in automobiles. Click the “Play” button above to hear their conversation.

Gimby says the new spider screens are currently being implemented in Ford vehicles in North America.
