Royal Oak Considers “Road Diet” to Curb Traffic
Officials study reducing driving lanes on Main Street.
Officials in Royal Oak are studying whether reducing driving lanes in the city’s downtown may help improve its economy. The city will conduct a survey of how a so-called “road diet” can improve commerce and mobility on Main Street. City Commissioner Michael Fournier says the study will analyze traffic statistics and answer key questions regarding the city’s future.
“What is the anticipated reduction in motorist-pedestrian accidents? What could this mean for our retailers and restaurateurs on Main Street? How will this enable the aesthetics of our community to improve and attract additional investment?”
Michael Fournier, Royal Oak City Commissioner
Fournier says Royal Oak has seen an uptick in population and economic growth in recent years. He says the city is looking at neighboring Ferndale to see how a “road diet” can improve commerce.
