EMU Receives $1.8 Million for Veterans, Low-Income Students
Federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s “Student Support Services” awards students in need.
$1.8 million in federal grant money will benefit students at Eastern Michigan University. Low-income, first-generation freshman students and military veterans will be able to use the funds for academic support and financial advising. University spokesperson Geoff Larcom says there was stiff competition for the funding.
“These grants aren’t just awarded on a whim. It indicates some of the good work being done at the university, but most importantly they really go to groups that can benefit from it and its exciting to think of some of the individual outcomes that will play out as a result of these grants.”

Larcom says the endowment comes from the U.S. Department of Education’s “Student Support Services” program. He says 80 veterans and 140 entering freshmen will benefit from the grants over the course of five years
