Huron County Holds Off on New Wind Farms
Huron County has instituted a moratorium on new wind farms until new terms are agreed upon.
The Huron County Board of Commissioners has placed a moratorium on new wind operations until October so that it can update its ordinance governing the industry.
Michigan’s Thumb area is home to about 40 percent of the state’s wind energy farms and turbines. Utility companies are under the gun because Michigan law now require that 10 percent of energy production must come by renewable sources before the end of this year. DTE Energy owns the most wind turbines in Huron County. The company says it’s considering projects in a few self-governing townships in Huron County that are not impacted by a moritorium imposed by the Huron County Board of Commissioners. They say the moritorium is giving planners time to address some of the overriding concerns from residents.
