VW Emission Deception Could Cost Billions

Automaker faces fines for cheating EPA and customers.

Volkswagen says about 11 million diesel vehicles around the world were fitted with software that enabled the automaker to skirt U.S. clean air rules. The Environmental Protection Agency says VW equipped the cars to perform better on emission tests than they would in actual driving conditions. The automaker also says it’s setting aside more than $7 billion to cover the cost of fixing those vehicles and winning back the trust of its customers.
