Southfield Buys Northland Mall

The City of Southfield purchased Northland Mall.

The City of Southfield is buying Northland Mall near Eight Mile Road and the Lodge Highway. The city plans to demolish the building and redevelop the area into a mixed-use space.

Southfield Mayor Donald Fracassi says the mall is a well-known landmark.

“Northland has been synonymous with the word Southfield since ever since it was built,” Fracassi says. “Matter of fact, northland probably had a bigger name than Southfield. So we have to protect the images that northland and the properties and we knew it was in our corporate city limits and we did.”

Fracassi says the property cost about $2.4 million. The mall closed in March after years of financial hardship.
