Could the Zika Virus Come to Michigan?
UM expert says Michigan isn’t at risk for Zika Virus, but Michiganders should take heed
Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson speaks with Dr. Arnold Monto, the Thomas Francis Jr. Collegiate Professor of Epidemiology, from University of Michigan about the Zika Virus in Brazil, whether it could come to the Midwest, and what diseases epidemiologists are concerned about.
“This is a very unusual situation because it is a virus which causes very mild disease in other population groups, but if it infects a pregnant woman during her gestation, it can cause major damage to the unborn child,” says Monto. “It’s a particular challenge because the virus is apparently widespread.”
