Former Detroit Mayor Gribbs Dies
Ex-Detroit Mayor Roman Gribbs has died. He served city during tumultuous early 1970’s.
Former Detroit Mayor Roman Gribbs has died.
He spent roughly half-a-century in public life, moving from roles as a prosecutor and sheriff to serving as a judge and a mayor.
Gribbs led Detroit during one of the more tumultuous periods in the city’s history…serving from 1970 until 1974.
He did not seek reelection and Coleman Young became the next mayor of Detroit.
But Gribbs remained in the public spotlight, serving as a judge on a circuit court and on the Michigan Court of Appeals.
In a written statement current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan called Gribbs a “textbook definition of a dedicated public servant.”
Gribbs died in Livonia.
He was 90 years old.
