Cass Park Declared Historic District

The Cass Park area near the new Red Wings arena will be preserved.

The Detroit City Council has voted unanimously to create the Cass Park Historic District. The district preserves more than a dozen buildings near Cass Park and Temple Street, just blocks from the new Red Wings arena.

Council Member Raquel Castaneda-Lopez says the designation recognizes the area’s historical value.

“It really adds to the vibrancy. It adds to the attractiveness,” Castaneda-Lopez says. “It helps increase property values and such — versus some of the acquisitions that said the contrary. But it could really help add to the vibrancy of the communities.”

The newly-designated district does exclude some buildings, including a men’s homeless shelter.

The exclusion allows those buildings to make changes to the exterior of the properties, which is restricted in historic districts.
