Detroit Public Schools Submits Financial and Operating Plan
DPS emergency manager’s report reviews recent past and looks to next year.
Detroit Public Schools submitted a financial and operating plan to the state this week.
The report outlines the successes and failures in Transition Manager Steven Rhodes’ first few months on the job. The budget deficit that would have left teachers unpaid this spring and a recent embezzlement scandal are included. DPS Communications Director Michelle Zdrodowski said what the plan does not include is school closings.
“He really wants to make sure that those big decisions are made under local control,” Zdrodowski said. “And the other thing that we’ve found over the years is that closing a school does not necessarily save the district money.”
The district said it plans to implement a dozen programs designed by DPS teachers to make the district more effective for its current students and more attractive to potential students. Those include two free Montessori programs and an Arab-English technical school.
