Detroit Plans Improvements to 80 Miles of Road
Detroit to spend $60 million on road improvements this construction season.
Detroit is improving 80 miles of road this year. The city will spend $60 million on improving street surfaces in all seven districts, allocating nearly 20 million dollars more to pave streets than it did last year. Ron Brundidge is the Director of Detroit’s Department of Public Works. He says part of East Jefferson will be re-developed to improve non-motorized traffic.
“It’s about 3.5 mile segment where in addition to just paving the roads, we’re also going to be continuing the city’s to be more bicycle and pedestrian friendly by installing protective bike paths and we’re also looking at installing new medians as part of that particular project.”

Brundidge says $10 million is being allocated for specialized projects, such as bridge improvements and green infrastructure. He says the city received additional backing this year from federal transportation funds, in addition to Michigan gasoline and weight tax revenues. The street repairs are scheduled for completion by November.
