Affirmations in Ferndale to Hold Vigil for Victims in Orlando Shooting
Affirmations will hold a vigil tonight to honor the victims of the Orlando.
A Metro Detroit LGBT community center is holding a vigil tonight in honor of the victims of a mass shooting in Orlando early Sunday.
A gunman killed 49 people and wounded 53 at Pulse, a popular nightclub in Orlando.
Katie Cook is the director of development at Affirmations in Ferndale. She says the center will remain open and provide help to anyone in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“We can’t, you know, lock doors and be scared. We move forward,” Cook says. “And if somebody is not feeling comfortable, they’re feeling scared and they don’t know what to do…call us. One of the things we provide here is counseling. We have different group meetings. Or you can just come hang out in the center with other people who are feeling the same way.”
Cook says Affirmations will partner with organizations such as the ACLU of Michigan, Between the Lines, and Equality Michigan to hold the vigil.
The event starts at 7:30 tonight at the Affirmations community center in Ferndale.
