Peters Talks About Guns and Pipes [VIDEO]
Michigan Senator supports universal background checks, sponsored pipeline safety bill headed to president.
U.S.Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan) says the federal government needs to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them, including those on terrorism watch lists. Speaking on the Senate floor Wednesday, Peters added that gun safety laws won’t work without universal background checks.
“It doesn’t matter if we ban selling guns to people on the terror watch list if large percentages of purchasers avoid a background check by buying a weapon at a gun show or over the internet,” Peters said.
Gun rights supporters argue more gun control will only punish law-abiding citizens, and won’t necessarily prevent mass shootings. Peters tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller Congress needs to do something to keep people safe. He also praised his colleagues for passing the Protecting Our Infrastructure of Pipelines and Enhancing Safety (PIPES) Act and sending it to President Barack Obama. Among other things, the legislation would require critical reviews of pipeline age and integrity. Click on the audio player above to hear the conversation.
