Dingell Makes Passionate, Personal Speech on Guns During U.S. House Sit-in

Dingell says Dems have “never been more united” over gun control vote and sit-in

Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives began a sit-in over a vote on gun control measures yesterday. Republican leadership has thus-far refused to vote on bills that would prevent people on terrorist watch lists and no-fly lists from getting guns, as well as expanded background checks. Democrats took to the floor of the House demanding a vote before they would leave.

House Speaker Paul Ryan initially turned off C-SPAN cameras, which led Democrats to filming with their cell phones. People tuning in have seen tension between Democrats and Republicans and impassioned floor speeches. One of those passionate speeches came from Congresswoman Debbie Dingell.

“I know what it’s like to have a gun pointed at you,” she stated emotionally from the House floor.

Dingell tells Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson that her father was an irresponsible gun owner who often scared her and her sister. She also said in her speech that gun control is the one major issue that has been a source of any tension in her 35-year marriage to former-Congressman John Dingell, a gun owner and advocate.

The sit-in is in its second day in the House, and Dingell says it will continue until Democrats get what they want.

“The caucus has never been more united,” she says.

Dingell urges citizens to “call your congressman” and tell them about any concerns with gun laws.
