When You’re Hot, You’re Hot
The National Weather Service says it’s been a hotter, drier summer than normal in Detroit.
Hot weather is back in Metro Detroit. The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures at or near 90 degrees through Friday. Detroit has seen 90 degrees 18 times since June 11. The daily high temperature has been at least 80 degrees for 24 straight days as of August 10. Overnight temperatures haven’t fallen below 60 since July 4. Meteorologist Rich Pollman tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller high pressure in the atmosphere and a lack of rain have made this summer hotter than usual. NWS data show more than three inches of rain have fallen since June 1 in Detroit, about five inches less than average. Pollman says there’s a chance of thunderstorms through the weekend. SEMCOG says heat and humidity combined with ground-level ozone can make it hard for people with health problems to breathe. The council suggests refueling vehicles after sundown, limiting travel, putting off lawn mowing, and using less electricity.
