DFD: Fewer than 60 Fires During Angels’ Night, Focus Shifted to Children
Detroit saw fewer than 60 fires during the Angels’ Night volunteer campaign for the second year in a row.
Angels’ Night volunteers shifted their focus Monday night from patrolling neighborhoods to facilitating children activities for Halloween.
Volunteers organized trick-or-treating sites and haunted houses at fire departments, recreational centers, and police precincts across the city.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says it was a test to see if some volunteers could be taken away from patrols to give more attention to the city’s children.
“We did not see any uptick in fires when we moved our volunteers from patrolling to children’s activities. And in the coming months, we’re going to have further conversations with our community groups to create even more focus on children’s activities for the three days,” Duggan says.
Detroit officials reported only 59 fires and 9 citations to adults and minors during the three-day Angels’ Night period.
More than 6,000 volunteers participated in patrols and other events over the weekend.
