Inspectors to Fine Landlords Who Have Failed to Fix Heating Systems
Detroit building inspectors are cracking down on 143 apartment owners that have yet to fix their heating systems.
City of Detroit building inspectors are warning landlords to make sure their heating systems are working or pay a $500 fine.
The Building Safety Engineering and Environmental Department is targeting 143 buildings which have already been issued heating violations.
David Bell is the Director of the department. He says there are a number of safety requirements that must be in place for these buildings.
“They have to make sure that the tenants have a clear exit path, they have the proper exit signage. Proper smoke detectors in the unit. That any and all handrails are securely fastened,” Bell says.
Bell says owners who fail to pay the fine or fix the problems could be charged with a misdemeanor.
He says any tenant who wishes to file a complaint should contact the Building Safety department.
