Moving Up and Down the Food Chain to Help Feed the Hungry

Detroit food rescue program collects food from 800 farmers, restaurants, wholesalers, grocers and more

The Holidays often include campaigns to help people in need. But most of those organizations are working year round. Some are providing food for low income families. In Detroit one such organization works up and down the food chain. Forgotten Harvest is called a Food Rescue Organization. It works with hundreds of farmers, producers, sellers, and distributors to take food that is headed for disposal and salvage it while it’s still fresh enough to eat. Forgotten Harvest spokesman John Owens tells WDET’s Amy Miller that the program started with one women’s dedication to preventing food from restaurants and grocery stores from being thrown out.
