Carson Launches Tour at Carson High in Detroit
HUD Secretary says he’s listening.
U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson visited Detroit Wednesday to launch a national listening tour.
Carson held a forum at Benjamin Carson High School in Detroit – a school that bears his name. He said the purpose of the tour is to hear from what he called ‘boots on the ground.’
“I want to hear from the people who are actually involved in providing housing, building housing, living in the housing,” Carson said. “Because it’s the best way, I think, to get the best impression of what really works.”
But those people were not in attendance. Adult audience members and media were not given an opportunity to speak. From the crowd of mostly students and parents, Carson took questions from three students.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was among the city officials who also attended the event. He said housing issues facing the city can only be resolved with support from HUD.
“We have a lot of people moving into the city and we want to make sure people moving in don’t push out those who have been here,” Duggan said. “The affordable housing initiatives out of HUD are a big part of making sure longtime Detroiters are protected in their homes.”
Carson will be in Detroit through the end of the week.
