The University of Detroit Mercy is lowering its tuition from $41,000 to $28,000 a year.

The 30 percent price reduction will be available to all new and current students at the institution.

University President Antoine Garibaldi says the drop in tuition will not affect overall funding for the school.

“Any gap that we have created as a result of lowering the tuition from $41,000 to $28,000 will be made up by additional students that we expect to enroll,” Garibaldi says.

Garibaldi says the university lowered the tuition to better compete with other public and private institutions in the state.

He says the reduced price should provide assurance to parents and students that a high-quality college education is affordable and attainable.
