How are MSU Students Reacting to the Nassar Scandal?
“We walked into the editorial board meeting knowing that something needed to change,” says MSU student reporter Marie Weidmayer
Two days ago Lou Anna K. Simon announced she would resign as president of Michigan State University after immense public pressure grew around the way she handled the Larry Nassar case.
The first newspaper to report that Simon would resign wasn’t a major market paper or television station. It was the student newspaper, The State News.
The staff of journalism students in East Lansing have been covering the case of Larry Nassar as much as any professional operation in the state.
The editorial board of students also called on Simon to resign in a column that was highly critical of her leadership in the wake of the Nassar scandal.
Marie Weidmayer, an MSU student and reporter for The State News, joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about how students on campus are reacting to the news of Simon’s resignation and the student editorial board’s decision to call for her to step down.
“We walked into the editorial board meeting knowing that something needed to change and that we needed to call for a change,” she says.
“The newsroom itself has been very supportive. People have been here at all hours. Everybody’s just working as hard as they can.”
