Trump Rule Change Could Hurt Hundreds of Thousands of Immigrants in SE Michigan

Over the past few years, we’ve had an intense debate in this country about what it means to be American. Who gets to call themselves an American? President Donald Trump has intensified that debate. He campaigned against illegal immigration — and once elected, has made clear that his aim is to re-think American status, especially for brown and black immigrants.
Monday marks the end a public comment period for a proposed change that would target immigrants who access public assistance — everything from Medicare to food stamps to housing subsidies. It would affect about 22 million people nationwide. That includes about 325,000 here in Michigan, according to Global Detroit, which describes itself as “a regional economic revitalization strategy mobilizing Metro Detroit’s immigrant potential.”
