Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is asking lawmakers to approve a big gas tax increase to fix the roads — 45 cents per gallon.

It would phase in over the course of a year and generate about $2 billion a year for roads and infrastructure.

Her budget also calls for big investments in school funding.

But are Michiganders willing to pay more for better roads and schools? Are these the right mechanisms to achieve those goals?

On Detroit Today, Stephen Henderson speaks with Michigan Public Radio Network State Capitol Correspondent Cheyna Roth about the budget address and hears from listeners about their reaction and willingness to pay up at the pump for better roads.
