Right to Life Petition Mobilizes 8,000 Volunteers In Campaign to Ban Abortion Procedure
The organization is collecting signatures for a ballot petition to ban a common abortion operation.
Right to Life of Michigan launched a campaign in June to end what’s medically known as dilation and evacuation abortions, which the ballot question describes as ‘dismemberment’ abortions. The organization is using a petition drive to bypass Governnor Gretchen Whitmer’s promise to veto any bills that restrict abortion access rights.
Genevieve Marnon is the legislative director for Right to Life of Michigan.
“We’ve done [ballot measures] 4 times in the past, but this is the one that’s taken us the longest,” says Marnon to WDET’s Sascha Raiyn.
She says with at least 340,047 signatures — 8 percent of the number of people who voted in the last election for governor — state law gives the legislature options for handling the measure.
