Coronavirus: What’s the Risk For Michiganders?

Concern over a potential spread of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, across U.S communities has Michigan’s health experts preparing for an outbreak. There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Michigan.

The rapid spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, to 47 countries and counting has inspired panic across the globe and caused markets to falter.

There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Michigan, but the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is now saying its only a matter of time until COVID-19 impacts communities in the United States.

Trini A. Mathew, an infectious disease expert at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, says its important to take COVID-19 seriously.

“We need to be concerned, I would not say we should be afraid.”

She’s insists that organizing ahead of time is paramount in combating the coronavirus.

“We need to be prepared based on what we have seen globally,” says Mathew. On the frequent comparison of COVID-19 to influenza, Mathew says its important to note that the mortality rate for COVID-19 is tracking as higher than the flu. Looking forward, vaccines are the safest bet in protecting against the virus, says Mathew, but until one is available, hand hygiene is key to protection and prevention.
