U.S. House Votes to Impeach Donald Trump
A majority of the U.S. House has voted to impeach President Donald Trump for his ‘incitement’ of the mob attack at the U.S. Capitol.
A majority of the U.S. House has voted to impeach President Donald Trump for a second time, just a week after he encouraged loyalists to “fight like hell” against election results and a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol.
“The president was called for help but he did not answer our call while our government was being taken over,” said Rep. Haley Stevens, a Democrat. “He failed to lead and therefore proved himself incapable of doing so.”
The House article of impeachment for incitement of insurrection was passed 232 to 197. Ten Republicans, including Michigan Reps. Peter Meijer and Fred Upton, joined Democrats in voting to impeach the president.
“President Trump betrayed his oath of office by seeking to undermine our constitutional process,” said Meijer, “And he bears responsibility for inciting the insurrection we suffered last week.”
During debate before the vote, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked Republicans and Democrats to “search their souls.” Trump is the first American president to be impeached twice.
“We and this country cannot begin healing and unity without accountability and justice,” said Rep. Brenda Lawrence. “The President of the United States incited a violent insurrection against Congress, you, me and the Vice President of the United States. This cannot be ignored.”
The impeachment proceedings came one week after a violent, pro-Trump mob breached the Capitol, sending lawmakers into hiding and revealing the fragility of the nation’s history of peaceful transfers of power. Five people died.
“On January 6th, [Trump] summoned and incited a mob of domestic terrorists to fight like hell and sent them to ransack this Capitol in order to prevent us from formalizing his election loss. It was a grotesque orgy of deadly white supremacy, anti-Semitism and strongman rule,” said Rep. Andy Levin before making his vote. “Today we will do our duty and vote to remove the author of this horrifying chapter and banish him from public service.”
Trump has taken no responsibility for the riot.
