The laws targeting the queer community in Florida and beyond

There has been enormous cultural progress with regards to inclusivity of LGBTQ+ individuals, says a local nonprofit leader.

 

In Florida, the state legislature passed a bill restricting discussion of gender and sexuality in school. The bill, which opponents have dubbed the “don’t say gay” bill is likely to be signed into law soon by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Despite some court decisions and legislative actions allowing equal protection under the law for people in the queer community, Black trans women face significantly higher rates of violence and discrimination than the general population, on average.

Dave Garcia is the executive director of Affirmations, Michigan’s largest LGBTQ+ Community Center. Garcia says some of the biggest challenges against the gay community happens specifically to trans Black women.
