Wayne State and Karmanos Cancer Institute receive $100 million in state funding for medical research center

Wayne State University and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute are planning a new research and educational center in Midtown Detroit.

The State of Michigan – flush with federal cash – is contributing $100 million for the project, which will cost $450 million total. The plan is to house collaborative medical education, research, and laboratories across two towers.

It’s not known exactly where the facility will go or what the timeline is for completion.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan teased the project last week when Governor Whitmer was in Detroit to sign the state budget.
