Detroit Evening Report, August 19, 2022: Michigan judge temporarily bans criminalizing abortions

Stop the Bans Abortion Rights Rally

Welcome to the Detroit Evening Report, a daily round-up of news that city residents need to know.

An Oakland County judge issued a ruling Friday that protects abortion providers and patients in Michigan from prosecution for the time being.

Judge Jacob Cunningham barred prosecutors from every county in the state where an abortion clinic operates from pursuing criminal charges based on a 1931 abortion ban. Some Republican prosecutors argued that counties had the right to enforce the ban despite an earlier injunction barring enforcement.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and organizers of a statewide petition campaign hope to add abortion rights to the state constitution. A challenge to the campaign came this week from a group that says the text of the petition is riddled with typos that make the language unreadable.
