Detroit Evening Report: Michigan Legislature passes ‘red flag’ gun law, heads to Whitmer’s desk

Michigan Democrats in the House and Senate passed gun safety bills for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to sign, accomplishing one of the party’s major agenda items since taking control of Lansing this year.

“Red flag” legislation would allow gun seizures from at-risk owners. The Michigan Senate voted along party lines for the proposal.
The bill is the final piece from the Democrats’ initial response to February’s mass shooting at Michigan State University. The courts could issue extreme risk protection orders if they find that a person might hurt themselves or others by possessing a gun. If the order is issued, the person in question would eventually be able to request a hearing on whether it should be rescinded.
Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak), the sponsor of the bill, has argued the measure will save lives.
