Detroit Evening Report: Michigan lawmakers considering revival of film tax credits

House Bills 4907 and 4908 – known as the Multimedia JOBS Act – propose a reimagining of the state’s film industry incentives.

Michigan’s original film tax credits were repealed in 2015 under then-Gov. Rick Snyder – ending what some considered the nation’s most generous state film package at the time.

Alexander Page – chair of the Michigan Film Industry Association’s Legislative Committee – says the proposed legislation is innovative.

“We’re starting from scratch, focusing on pro-jobs, pro Michigan and pro-economy principles,” said Page. “Unlike the old rebate system, our transferrable tax credit ensures benefits stay in Michigan — supporting local companies.”

The proposed act will offer larger incentives for productions employing Michigan residents and businesses. Page says he expects a $6-8 billion boost for Michigan’s economy during the first ten years if the new bills are signed into law.

• Michigan’s Operation Safe Neighborhood has resulted in law enforcement recovering 571 illegal guns, as well as ammunition and illegal drugs. Parole and probation agents teamed with local law enforcement agencies to conduct compliance checks on 5,300 probationers and parolees who are legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.
• Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians have agreed to a new contract with the DSO months before the current contract is set to expire. The new three-year deal increases pay 10.9% and makes changes to the audition and tenure processes.
• This weekend is Free Fishing Weekend at parks and other properties owned by the Department of Natural Resources. The DNR allows two full days for residents and visitors to fish without a license and waives entry fees for vehicles.
