Wayne County Could Finish Downtown Jail

County Executive Warren Evans says completing project looks like cheapest option

Wayne County could try to finish building a new jail in downtown Detroit. Construction stopped in 2013 after the project ran millions of dollars over budget. The county has approved a settlement with two developers who will design two options to complete the jail. AECOM Services and Ghafari Associates have until the end of February 2016 to submit design concepts and cost estimates. The interim settlement caps the total cost of completion at $175 million. The county is not obligated to finish the jail, and can refile its lawsuit against developers if the cost exceeds that cap. In an interview with WDET News reporters, County Executive Warren Evans said completing the project looks like the cheapest option for taxpayers.
