The Coverage: Detroit Bankruptcy One Year Later
DJC reporters chronicled the city’s recovery from bankruptcy. Where are we now?
In this special end-of-the-year program, WDET’s Sandra Svoboda recaps the “Detroit Bankruptcy: One Year Later” project and showcases some of the work in that series. Along with our partners in the Detroit Journalism Cooperative, the WDET reporters and producers looked at how the city’s administration is operating, post-bankruptcy, and how services are being delivered along with what challenges remain, how some of the deals and settlements played out, and what it all means for residents.

All of the DJC partners contributed to the “Detroit Bankruptcy: One Year Later Project.” At a community event earlier this month, several of the reporters talked with WDET News Director Jerome Vaughn about their work. Here’s that discussion, which included Bridge Magazine’s Mike Wilkinson, DPTV’s Ed Moore, Michigan Radio’s Lester Graham, Bridge Magazine’s Chastity Pratt Dawsey, The Jewish News’ Barbara Lewis, The Arab American News’ Ali Harb, and The Michigan Chronicle’s Keith Owens.
Here are the rest of the pieces that aired today on this special edition of Detroit Today:
- WDET Reporter Bre’Anna Tinsley talked with residents about what they think about the bankruptcy and its effects. Some think it was long overdue, some say it was not needed. Other people looked beyond it.
- Some residents think the city is in a comeback. WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter had this report about why we needed one and what we’re coming back from.
- Perhaps no bigger class of creditors was the focus of media coverage and wranglings in court. WDET’s Annamarie Sysling caught up with some of the retirees to hear what life has been like since they took their cuts in payments and health care after the case.
- WDET also explored some of the economic development initiatives happening around the city. Laura Herberg had this report about how small businesses are a big part of the city’s recovery, and J. Carlisle Larsen’s explored the projects in the Six Mile and Livernois neighborhood.
