Michigan Senate Approves Two District Plan for Detroit Public Schools
Schools would get money and oversight
The state senate approved a plan Tuesday to reform Detroit Public Schools.
The bill divides the district in two. The existing Detroit Public Schools system gets the 515 million dollars it needs to pay off its debt…but continues to exist only to pay that debt. Schools, students and staff will be moved to a new school district. That new district will get 200 million dollars in startup money.
The bills now move to the House for their consideration. The House is also considering its own package of DPS reform bills.
