McMorrow on viral speech, being an ally in 2022
State Sen. Mallory McMorrow’s floor speech pushing back against baseless and flagrant Republican attacks has been viewed over 14 million times.
A viral state Senate floor speech last week now has the nation and the world talking about how to counter flagrant right wing attacks. And its sparking conversations about what it means to be an ally in 2022.

State Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak) was responding to a fundraising email sent by her colleague state Sen. Lana Theis (R-Brighton) that baselessly accused Democrats of wanting to groom and sexualize children. McMorrow’s response has now been viewed more than 14 million times.

McMorrow says she received a call from President Joe Biden over the weekend.
“He just said thank you,” she says of the president. “And, and without divulging too much of a personal conversation, said that he’s been doing this a lot longer than I have, and has never seen it this bad — where flinging hateful and untruthful comments with no idea the consequences is just accepted as normal.”
Her hope, she says, is that people who respond positively to her floor speech will take action.
“It’s not going to be enough to watch a speech,” says McMorrow. “If you saw the speech, if you liked it, if you thought that it was the right thing to do, you’re the next person who needs to stand up and do the same thing.”
