Metro Detroit animal shelters offering pet adoption promotions in July
Now is a great time to adopt a pet if you’ve been looking to add a furry family member to your home. Select animal shelters and rescues in metro Detroit are offering discounted, and in some cases free, pet adoptions throughout the month of July.
One of the most popular promotions is Bissell’s Empty The Shelters campaign held multiple times throughout the year. You can adopt a pet paying no more than $50, plus any licensing fees, at participating shelters and rescues. Detroit Animal Care and Control is waiving adoption fees for the adoptable dogs in their care.
Detroit Dog Rescue is also waiving fees for adoptable animals in their care as part of Empty the Shelters. You can find participating shelters near you at emptytheshelters.com.

Michigan Humane is offering their own pet adoption promotion separate from Empty The Shelters. The organization announced earlier this month that they are waiving adoption fees on select adult (six months and older) adoptable animals. This includes the dog Dudley, a 5-year-old pit bull mix who is available to adopt at Michigan Humane’s Detroit shelter at 7887 Chrysler Drive. I’ve spent time with Dudley personally and he loves showing affection.
With cost of goods and services going up due to inflation, Michigan Humane has seen an uptick in animal surrenders to their shelters.
“Just like shelters across the state and country, Michigan Humane has been experiencing an increased demand for surrender and lower adoption traffic over the past few months,” says Michigan Humane communication manager Anna Chrisman.
Animal supporters who aren’t able to adopt a pet or donate at the moment have other ways to support shelters and rescues like Michigan Humane.
“There are a lot of options, particularly in these warm summer months! If you find yourself with some free time, volunteering at your local shelter or rescue is a great way to make an impact,” Chrisman states. “You may also want to consider fostering an animal in need of some extra TLC- this not only helps the animal recover and thrive in a home environment, but eases strain in the shelter as well.”
