White House Grant will Help Detroit Youth Find Summer Jobs
U.S. Labor Dept. is sending $2 million to Detroit to help kids find jobs, instead of trouble, over the summer.
The Obama Administration is granting Detroit $2 million to help develop job opportunities for young people in the city.
The grant is part of$ 21 million in funding the White House and the Labor Department are providing to help young people living in poverty find jobs during the summer in particular.
Officials including President Obama have said summer work is a way to both help younger people earn a living and keep them from being idle and possibly ending up in trouble.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says the funding, which will be distributed over a two year period, will help the city provide about 1,000 summer jobs.
That’s in addition to 8,000 job opportunities Duggan says he wants to make available through a program offered by the city called Grow Detroit’s Young Talent, which is now in its second year.
