The Detroit Board of Education met with Detroit Public School’s Transition Manager Steven Rhodes to offer ideas on returning the district to local control.

Several members suggested the board conduct a special forensic audit on the contracts signed since the state took over the district. Board Member Annie Carter and President Herman Davis asked Rhodes if he would support the audit.

Annie Carter: “If we specify exactly what areas we want the auditor to look in, you will actually support us on that?” Carter asks.

Steven Rhodes: “Well, what I’ve said is I won’t oppose it. But I don’t know how it is going to be paid for. Because forensic auditors are extremely expensive.”

Herman Davis:“So as long as we can make sure that it’s being paid for you will support it?”

Steven Rhodes: “Absolutely.”

Board members also asked questions about issues the district faces, including why failed Education Achievement Authority schools have not returned to DPS.

The district says Rhodes will respond with his answers by next week.
