UAW Says Tesla Workers Should be Unionized
UAW says Tesla plant in California is only non-unionized factory owned by US automaker. UAW wants to change that.
The head of the United Auto Workers says the labor group still wants to unionize an assembly plant operated by Tesla Motors.
Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California is the only assembly plant in the U.S. owned by an American car company that does not have union representation.
The United Auto Workers want to change that, especially since Tesla is projecting a ten-fold increase in production at the California plant by 2018.
UAW President Dennis Williams says the union wanted to give Tesla time to grow from being a start-up company.
But now Williams says workers at the Tesla plant deserve the right to collectively bargain with officials.
Williams adds that Tesla has not met production projections it’s made in the past and may not hit the roughly half-a-million vehicles it predicts it will eventually produce at the California factory.
