Detroit Evening Report, Aug. 25, 2022: Bureau of Elections recommends abortion ballot initiative should go before voters

Michigan’s Bureau of Elections is recommending a proposed constitutional amendment to guarantee abortion go before voters this November.
A staff report out Thursday found the campaign behind the amendment gathered over 300,000 signatures more than required to make the ballot.
Attorney Bonsitu Kitaba works with the “Reproductive Freedom for All campaign. She says it will restore rights in Michigan to where they were before the U-S Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
“The proposal protects everyone’s right to make decisions about pregnancy. This includes birth control, miscarriage, prenatal care, abortion, childbirth and infertility.”
If approved, the amendment would trump Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban currently being challenged in court.
A state board is scheduled to meet later this month to decide whether to accept the elections bureau’s recommendation.
