Detroit Evening Report: Detroit home assessments continue to be inaccurate
Welcome to the Detroit Evening Report, a daily round-up of news that city residents need to know.
A group of housing advocates in Detroit say the city has improved its ability to assess homes for property taxes, but some of the lowest valued homes are still being over-assessed.
Eric Langowski is a data scientist for the Coalition for Property Tax Justice. He says Detroit is also under-assessing its highest valued homes.
“In 2021, the most expensive homes were assessed at about 25% of their value,” Langowski shares. “And the least expensive homes were assessed at about 50% of their value.”
The Coalition for Property Tax Justice is calling to reform the city’s assessment process to close that gap. The group also wants Wayne County to pause its tax foreclosure of owner-occupied homes until the assessments are fixed.
