Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin talks her run for office and problems in our politics
As a result of redistricting, Congresswoman Slotkin is running in the redrawn 7th District, which overlaps with parts of the region she currently represents.
As we get closer to election day in Michigan, some Congressional races are heating up — including the 7th Congressional District. It’s one of the most expensive House races — a traditional indicator that the race is close.
Issues debated in the 7th Congressional District are similar to things discussed across the country, including inflation and abortion.
Last week, Detroit Today spoke with Republican and state Senator Tim Barrett (R-Charlotte), who is running in that district, about some of these issues. This week, Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing) joined the show to discuss why she’s running in the 7th and why she’s been supporting the Democratic agenda.
“I just don’t think we have a positive way forward in this country without two strong parties with empathy.” — Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin.

Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin is a Democrat running in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. She says the middle class has been hurting, people are afraid of losing their rights and there is concern about the future of America’s democracy.
“I just don’t think we have a positive way forward in this country without two strong parties with empathy,” says Slotkin, “who just have very different views about the role of government in our lives. And we’ve gotten away from that push and pull that made decent policy, and we’ve turned it into a divisive culture war that I just think is completely unhealthy for the country.”
