Prosecutors Say Police Body Cams Will Add Time, Cost to Cases
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says reviewing all footage will cost her office millions.
Prosecutors across Michigan say body cameras worn by police officers will aid in getting convictions. But they warn reviewing the videos will add time and expense to prosecutions.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says every minute of every video taken by every officer on a raid or an arrest will have to be reviewed by an attorney or investigator.
“What people don’t realize is we have to examine every film that’s been used on every single officer, so this is going to add exponentially to the time it takes us to review warrants now,” said Worthy.
“The bottom line is I’m going to have to double or triple my staff to handle this when all police officers in Wayne County, all police agencies in Wayne County have this.”
Worthy says her office alone will require millions of dollars to hire the additional legal help and buy the equipment necessary to do the job.
