Michigan AG Files Civil Lawsuit Over Flint Water Crisis
Michigan Attorney General alleges companies hired by Flint were negligent, assured officials lead-tainted water was safe
Michigan’s Attorney general is filing a civil lawsuit against several companies that allegedly contributed to lead contamination in the city of Flint’s water supply.
The Attorney General claims the companies committed professional negligence.
The suit charges that the company LAN failed to adequately prepare Flint’s treatment plant when the city switched to using its river as a water supply two years ago, allowing the system to become contaminated with lead.
The suit also names the company Veolia North America, which advised Flint that its water was safe.
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette says the companies did not live up to industry standards.
“They failed miserably in their job, basically botched it. Didn’t stop the water in Flint from being poisoned. They made it worse, that’s what they did,” Schuette said.
In April the Attorney General filed criminal charges against several state and Flint officials for contributing to the water contamination.
