Following mounting speculation, on Monday news broke that Democratic Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin is entering the race to become Michigan’s next United States senator. The decision follows Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s surprise decision not to seek a fifth term in 2024, opening up the potentially pivotal swing seat to a host of challengers.
Rep. Slotkin spoke to Detroit Today’s Stephen Henderson about why she is choosing to run for the U.S. Senate seat.

Guest
Rep. Elissa Slotkin is the Democratic United States Congresswoman representing Michigan’s 7th Congressional District.
“I’ve been a congresswoman for four years, and a while I’m a national security person by expertise and am asked to weigh in on that…my first and primary focus has been on Michigan and that, to me, it’s what I will do as a senator,” says Slotkin.
“I think all you have to do is look at my record on the bills that I’ve written, sponsored, co-sponsored and voted on,” continues Slotkin. “They have to do with preserving and expanding a middle class in our state.”
