Detroit Evening Report: Community fridge provides access to free food on Detroit’s westside

A community refrigerator with free food was placed outside a church on Detroit’s westside over the weekend.

The project is a partnership between Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where the appliance is located, and the New Martin Park District Association. Association vice president and a senior pastor of the church, Blanton L. Banks, says residents and grocery stores donated the food.
“The produce or the food we put in has to be from store, nothing from someone’s home that they may have prepared,” Banks explains. “It will be as though you get it out of the store. But it’s open to the community somewhere between 8 [a.m.] and 8 [p.m.] and free for whoever wants to come and get it.”
A group called Detroit Community Fridge donated the refrigerator and the wooden cabinet that surrounds it. The organization helped provide five other public refrigerators across the city.
