Scientists say Little Brown Bats are in BIG trouble
White Nose Syndrome killing 80-100% of some colonies
Two common species of bats in Michigan are struggling to stay healthy. Certain Little Brown Bat and Northern Long Eared Bat populations have contracted a deadly fungus called White Nose Syndrome. It’s an invasive disease that has spread to 29 states and five Canadian provinces. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently awarded a million dollars in grant funding to Michigan and other states to help mitigate the devastating impact of the fungus. Fish and Wildlife Spokesman Jonathan Reichard says hibernating colonies have been wiped out by the fungus, which consumes body fat and triggers a deadly immune responses
